Dow Chemical is one of the largest chemical companies in the world. DOW was founded in 1897 and has since been active in the chemical sector. DOW chemical is also active in the Benelux region. The history of DOW chemical in the Netherlands goes back to 1955. At this day, the plant in Terneuzen is the largest DOW facility in the Benelux. With 17 factories DOW is the largest employer in the province of Zeeland. The Terneuzen facility mainly produces plastics. In this industry a good HSE policy is essential. Especially in Terneuzen, where DOW employs over 1700 employees. Ruud, founder of WAVE WIND, has worked several years for Dow Chemical as HSE manager. WHAT RUUD DID AT DOW

As HSE manager (EH & S delivery), Ruud’s was responsible for: Vessel loading operations, rail loading stations and pipeline distributions. At that time, Ruud held the role of hygiene coordinator and dealt with stressors in the workplace such as illness, injury, aggravation or general threats to the welfare of the employees. By anticipating, evaluating and communicating these stressors, dangerous situations could be avoided. Ruud was at this time engaged in all HSE activities related to loading and unloading ships. He made sure the QHSE management systems were up to date, conducted internal audits and reported to management about the QHSE. He also made sure the RI&E was up to date. Ruud looks back on a challenging and rewarding time at DOW chemical.
